Getting to Berlin

Air

Two airports provide air travel to and from Berlin. Tegel and Schönefeld airports.

Tegel Airport is 8 kms northwest of the city centre. Journey time is 15 minutes. The JetExpressBus TXL connects the airport to the main train station Hauptbahnhof.  So do buses 109 and 128. You can catch the Expressbus X9 at the train station Zoologischer Garten. This bus only stops at main bus stops.

Schönefeld Airport is a bit further away but more convenient for those staying on the east side of Berlin. The airport is 18 kms from the city centre and is connected by the S-Bahn lines S49 and S9. A number of AiportExpress trains run from/to Hauptbahnhof, Zoologischer Garten, Friedrichstraße, Alexanderplatz and Ostbahnhof every half an hour. There is also a bus connection (Schnellbus SXF 1) between the station Südkreuz and airport Schönefeld.

Train

The fast InterCityExpress, Intercity, Eurocity and InterRegio Trains all offer a train service to Berlin from all over Germany and Europe. The train stations they stop at are well connected to the public transport system.

The main central station in the city centre is Hauptbahnhof. If you’re travelling long distance then you’ll probably arrive at the station Ostbahnhof, which is located in the district Berlin-Friedrichshain.

Car

Berlin is easily accessed by car as all motorways to the city lead to the Berlinger Road (A10).  A number of access roads lead to the city centre.

If you wish to get to the west of Berlin, take the A115. For those needing to get to the south-east of the city, take the A113. To get to the north, take the A114 for Pankow/Weissensee, for Reinickendorf the A111.

Take note that Berlin has two city centres – city west (around the Kurfürstendamm area) and city east (Mitte district)

Bus

Berlin is also quite easy to get by bus. Charlottenburg near the Exhibition Centre (ICC), is the city’s main long-distance coach station. Buses arrive here from all over Germany and Europe.

The Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof / ZOB is the central coach terminal.
